As it has done elsewhere, the impact of LEED on the Canadian building industry has been transformative, leading not only to changes in design, but also in overall operations and construction practices.  It has also led to bottlenecks as applications for LEED certification pile up.  Consequently, the CaGBC (Canada Green Building Council) is implementing changes in an attempt to bring the average certification process to less than six (6) months.

The demand for LEED is a positive sign of where the green building industry is going in Canada.  It’s te CaGBC’s responsibility to support and better serve the market,” said Thomas Mueller, President and CEO of CaGBC.

To that end of better serving the market, LEED Canada has implemented the following changes:

  • Additional internal staff have been hired to work on backlogged project files and four (4) new review teams have been created — there were only two (2) before — to certify projects;
  • Shortening the three-stage certification pathway to two stages for LEED Canada NC 1.0 and LEED Canada CS 1.0 projects;
  • Investing in technology infrastructure to improve the administration process;
  • Introducing a design review process that will enable the review to occur and be addressed while relevant parties are still engaged;
  • Introducing measures to encourage quicker response times from applicant teams;
  • Discussing the more complex documentation requirements in an interactive workshop, “Speed up Your LEED Canada-NC 1.0 Certification: Getting it Right the First Time;”
  • Offering online, on-demand sessions addressing the certification process.

With greater support and training for all involved, the process is sure to improve and garner even further support going forward.  Get those applications submitted!
